What is Bacaan Tahiyat or Attahiyat (ٱلتَّحِيَّات) ?
It is the Arabic term for “testimony” or “affirmation (of faith)”; it is also known as the greeting (ٱلتَّحِيَّات).
This is the part of the prayer where the prayerer kneels or sits on the ground and praises God, greets the messenger and the righteous people of God, followed by the two testimonials.

اَلتَّحِيَّاتُ الْمُبَارَكَاتُ الصَّلَوَاتُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ ِللهِ. اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ. اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللهِ الصَّالِحِيْنَ. أَشْهدُ اَنْ لاَإِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ وَاَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُوْلُ اللهِ

- Attahiyyatul Mubarakaatush solawaatuth thayyibatu lillaah,
- Assalaamu’alaika ayyuhan nabiyyu warahmatullaahi wabarakaatuh,

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكَ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلٰۤى آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلٰى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلٰۤى آلِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

Attahiyat Translation
Blessed salutations, prayers, good deeds to God. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, as well as God’s mercy and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of God. I bear witness that there is no deity but God, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger.
Benefits of Attahiyat
Among the four forms of honor presented in attahiyat are:
- Our Creator, al-Khalid, deserves a special tribute beginning with greetings (all honors and congratulations).
- Respect for the Messenger of Allah by saying, عَلَيْكَ “Peace be upon you”
- We owe ourselves respect and prosperity with the words “اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْنَا” Peace be upon us
- All the pious servants of Allah are assured of respect and prosperity with the words عِبَادِ اللّٰهِ الصَّالِحِينَ (pious servants)
Abdullah (b. Mas`ud) said:
While observing prayer behind the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) we used to recite: Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon so and so. One day the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to us: Verily Allah is Himself Peace. When any one of you sits during the prayer, he should say: All services rendered by words, by acts of worship, and all good things are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah’s mercy and blessings. Peace be upon us and upon Allah’s upright servants, for when he says this it reaches every upright servant in the heavens and the earth. (And say further): I testify that there is no god but Allah and I testify that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him and offer it.
Sahih Muslim
The meeting between Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH) and Allah:
When the Prophet Muhammad SAW met Allah, he did not greet Him with ‘Assalam Alaikum’. What would someone say if he met Allah? Since ALL sources of order come from Him, we cannot wish HIM peace. So Prophet Muhammad SAW said:
“Attahiyyaatu Lillahi Was Salawatu Wattayyibatu” (All compliments, all prayer and worship are for Allah).

Allah SWT Replied:
Assalamu Alaika Ayyuhannabiyyu ‘Warahmatullahi Wabarka’tuhu (Peace be upon you, Oh Prophet and Allah’s Mercy and Blessings).

In response to this, Prophet Muhammad PBUH said:
“Assalamu Alaina Wa’ala’Ibadillahis Saa’liheen” (Peace be on us and on all good slaves of Allah)
Prophet Muhammad SAW
As the Angels were listening to Allah’s conversation with His Messenger, the Angels said:
“Ash’had’u’un La ilaha illalla hu Wa Ash’hadu Anna Muhammadun Abd’uhu Wa Rasooluh”
(I bear witness that no one is worthy of worship except Allah And I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger).
