Yusuf Islam Biography (A journey from Cat Stevens to Yusuf Islam)

Cat Stevens achieved his early success in the mid of 60s. His popular music was “I Love My Dog” and “Matthew and Son”. He was a prolific songwriter writing songs such as “The First Cut Is The Deepest” and “Here Comes My Baby” for other artists.

One of the world’s most famous converts, he embraced Islam in 1977 and went on to become an energetic supporter of Islamic education, Yusuf Islam was the founder of Muslim Aid and Small Kindness. He also starts Singing English Islamic Nasheeds. He was the Artists and Producer of those Nasheeds as Well. Yusuf Islam recognized internationally due to his groundbreaking work in education and humanitarian relief. Yusuf Islam efforts helped secure the British government’s first-time support for Muslim Schools. The three schools he founded in Londons Brent district were Islamia Primary, Islamia Girls’ Secondary and the Brondesbury College for Boys consistently top the boroughs examination league tables.

Recently, he has turned his attention to Da’wah through the mainstream media and his recordings. The newly founded ‘Yusuf Islam Foundation’ is engaged in establishing a cultural and exhibition space, the Maqam Centre, in north-west London, which will project the universal Abrahamic message of Islam: the belief in One God, Allah, and the branches of Prophethood, completed by the arrival of Muhammad, peace and blessings on him.

2003: World Award (also known as the “World Social Award”), organized by Mikhail Gorbachev, for “humanitarian relief work helping children and victims of war”
2004: Man of Peace Award of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates (an award organization founded by Mikhail Gorbachev) for his “dedication to promoting peace, the reconciliation of people and to condemn terrorism”

2005: ASCAP Songwriter of the Year and Song of the Year for “The First Cut Is the Deepest”
2009: Honorary Award of the German Sustainability Award
2015: Global Islamic Economy Awards for contributions toward peace through the Arts
2015: Steiger Award honored in the category “International” for commitment to charitable projects
2005: Honorary doctorate by the University of Gloucestershire for services to education and humanitarian relief
2007: Honorary doctorate (LLD) by the University of Exeter, in recognition of “his humanitarian work and improving understanding between Islamic and Western cultures”
2015: Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards
2014: Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
